Snowmass Village Altitude: What to Know at 8,104 Feet

Snowmass Village sits at roughly 8,104 feet — about 200 feet higher than Aspen town. That sounds trivial and mostly is, but it comes with a practical difference that catches people out: in Snowmass you tend to sleep, eat, and stay at elevation, where in Aspen you drop back into town at the end of the day.

If you’re staying in Snowmass, here’s what that means and how we deliver there.

How high is Snowmass Village compared to Aspen?

Snowmass Village base is around 8,104 feet. Aspen town is 7,908. The ski terrain above Snowmass runs considerably higher, topping out above 12,000 feet at the Cirque.

The 200-foot difference between the two towns is not, on its own, physiologically significant. What matters more is the pattern of your day.

Why does staying in Snowmass feel different?

You spend more hours at elevation. Snowmass is largely ski-in ski-out and self-contained — lodging, restaurants, and the mountain are all up there together. You’re less likely to descend into town in the evening, so your body gets fewer hours at the lower elevation.

Sleeping elevation is what matters most. Acclimatization happens largely overnight. Where you sleep affects your adjustment more than where you spend the afternoon, which is why the modest difference between the two villages shows up more than the number suggests.

It’s a longer trip down if something goes wrong. Descent is one of the two definitive treatments for altitude illness. From Snowmass you’re a little further from lower ground than you are in Aspen, and considerably further than the practical option of Glenwood Springs.

Who should pay attention to this?

For most healthy adults, staying in Snowmass rather than Aspen makes little practical difference beyond an extra day of adjustment.

It matters more for older travelers, anyone with a lung or heart condition, families with young children, and anyone who has had altitude symptoms on a previous trip. For those groups the difference between sleeping at 7,900 and 8,100 feet, with fewer hours spent lower, is worth planning around.

What should you do differently in Snowmass?

Give yourself an extra easy day. If you’d normally take day one light, take day one and the first half of day two light here.

Consider descending in the evening on your first night. Dinner in Aspen town, 20 minutes down the road, gives you a few hours at lower elevation during the part of the day when it’s easiest to arrange.

Take the overnight sleep piece seriously. No alcohol the first two nights, and consider supplemental oxygen while you sleep — it matters slightly more here than in town.

Arrange oxygen before you arrive if you’re susceptible. Snowmass is a straightforward delivery for us, but sourcing it at 11pm on a Saturday is harder for everyone than sorting it in advance.

Do you deliver oxygen to Snowmass?

Yes — Snowmass Village is a core part of our service area alongside Aspen, and we deliver to homes, hotels, condos, and short-term rentals throughout the village. Same-day delivery is usually available.

We’ll bring the equipment, set it up, and show you how to use it before we leave. If you’re not sure whether you need a stationary concentrator, a portable unit for the mountain, or both, that’s a five-minute phone conversation rather than something you need to figure out yourself.

We also serve Basalt, Woody Creek, and Telluride.
