Altitude and Dehydration in Aspen: Why It Happens Faster Than You Think
You dehydrate faster in Aspen than almost anywhere you’ve been, and most of it happens without you noticing. You lose water through breathing rather than sweating, so the usual signals — feeling hot, feeling thirsty — never fire. Plan on drinking noticeably more than you would at home, starting the day you arrive.
Dehydration doesn’t cause altitude sickness, but it makes every symptom of it worse and it’s the easiest thing on the list to fix.
Why does altitude dry you out so fast?
You breathe more, and the air is drier. At 7,908 feet your breathing rate increases automatically. Every one of those extra breaths carries moisture out of your lungs, and mountain air holds far less water vapor than air at sea level, so it pulls harder. You can lose a significant volume of water this way over a day without a drop of visible sweat.
The cold hides it. Sweat evaporates almost instantly in dry cold air. You finish a hike or a ski run genuinely dehydrated with dry skin and no sense that you’ve been sweating at all.
Thirst is an unreliable signal here. The sensation of thirst is blunted at altitude. By the time you feel thirsty in Aspen, you’re already behind.
Your kidneys are doing something different. Part of acclimatization involves excreting bicarbonate to adjust your blood chemistry, which increases urine output in your first days at elevation. That’s a normal, useful process — it just means more fluid going out.

What does altitude dehydration feel like?
It looks a great deal like altitude sickness, which is why the two get confused:
- Headache
- Fatigue out of proportion to what you did
- Dry mouth, dry eyes, cracked lips
- Dizziness when you stand up
- Reduced appetite
- Darker urine than usual
The overlap is genuine. Some people who think they have altitude sickness are substantially dehydrated, and some people who are dehydrated do also have altitude sickness. The practical answer is the same either way: fix the hydration first, because it’s free and it takes hours rather than days.
How much should you actually drink?
More than at home, spread through the day rather than in large amounts at once. A useful check is urine colour — pale straw is the target, darker means you’re behind.
Start before you arrive. Air travel is dehydrating on its own. Drinking well on the plane and the drive up means you land in better shape.
Front-load your morning. Most people wake dehydrated after a night of dry-air breathing. A large glass before coffee helps.
Don’t rely on alcohol-adjacent hydration. Beer at altitude is a common Aspen tradition and a genuinely bad idea in your first 48 hours. Alcohol is a diuretic and it suppresses breathing, compounding both problems at once.
Watch the coffee. A normal amount is fine. Doubling your usual intake because you’re tired is counterproductive.

Does dehydration make altitude sickness worse?
It doesn’t cause it — altitude sickness is caused by reduced oxygen availability, not fluid loss. But dehydration reduces blood volume, which makes oxygen delivery to your tissues less efficient, and it produces headache and fatigue independently.
So a dehydrated person at altitude feels worse than a hydrated one with the same degree of acclimatization, and they often recover more slowly. Hydration is the cheapest lever you have.
What if you’re drinking plenty and still feel awful?
If you’ve been hydrating consistently for a day and still have a headache, nausea, breathlessness, or significant fatigue, that’s more likely acute mountain sickness than dehydration — and the treatment is different. Rest, avoid further ascent, and consider supplemental oxygen, which addresses the underlying cause.
Get medical care rather than waiting if you develop confusion, difficulty walking straight, breathlessness at rest, or a wet cough. Those can indicate serious altitude illness and they worsen quickly.
